GDC Trip Day 2: Sunday March 4th
Since GDC wasn’t starting till Monday I decided I’d keep myself busy until I could go and pick up my conference pass. I decided I’d go check out a couple of art museums around town. The first museum I went to was the cartoon art museum which was pretty small, but had a lot of classic works. There were slides from Disney films, original sketches by sequential artists, and some concept art from Puss in Boots.
After walking through the museum I noticed I only killed about an hour , so I decided I’d check out the modern art museum which was right around the corner.
SFMOMA – huge building with really cool architecture.
Before I stepped into the SFMOMA I took a look around and ended up in the yerba Buena gardens which happened to be on top of the moscone center(where GDC is taking place). This place was incredibly beautiful and really clean. I took a moment just to relax and take the city in.
I wish forsyth looked like this.
Moscone center – GDC takes place here
I went in the sfmoma for a few minutes before a friend wanted to have lunch with me.
We walked around a bit and I spotted the Gamespot studio. You can barely see it I’m going to try to get a better shot tomorrow.
I wasn’t really expecting to like too many of the works in the SFMOMA but there were some really interesting works. One of my favorite pieces was based on time. A camera was set infront of a watch and another camera recorded the room. As the watch clicked every second it would capture another frame. So you would basically see time pass by second by second. On the edge of the projection the video wasn’t slowed down so you would see people moving in real time. You could actually make two instances of your self if you got the timing right. Reminds me of braid. Another piece was in a large room with an audio exhibit. In the corner the artist would record whoever came into room by typing it onto a computer. Then these updates were projected on the wall. For example, when I came it the screen read a guy with a grey cardigan walkins in he has jeans and glasses. It was like a status update of the room.
Then I went to get my pass then understood how big the game industry was and how everyone is sort of tied together. Groups would get together and say hello/catch up with each other. I had my pass printed and got my swag bag. I looked around the other floors just to check out the venue, but nothing was really going on. At this point I felt like my feet were going to fall off from walking all day – something I don’t do in Savannah too often. I headed back to the hotel, got my schedule together and passed out. Tomorrow I’ll be walking around the moscone center again and I’m definitely going to watch Indie Game: The Movie which I’m super excited about.
